It is a proud moment for the entire fisheries fraternity of Tamil Nadu, as Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), an autonomous body responsible for co-ordinating agricultural education and research in India ranked Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU), a State Agricultural University (SAU) as the number one Fisheries University of the Country for the year 2016-17. The ranking was given based on recommendations of the committee formed by the Council, which evaluated and ranked agricultural universities of the Country on the basis of performance and quality of outputs reported by the respective Universities. It has to be noted that TNFU was established only in the year 2012 but within a short period of time it has ranked ahead of a National Fisheries University. The ranking not only exhibited the top notch performance of TNFU but also ensured financial support from ICAR as the Council has decided to fund better performing SAUs with higher share. At present, TNFU is striving hard to push its national excellence to international standards in all the areas of fisheries which are evident from the infrastructure development happening recently under the dynamic leadership of the Vice Chancellor of the University. The University headquartered at Nagapattinam, currently has 30 Constituent Units (which includes recently started Fisheries College at Thalainayar) concerned with fisheries research, education and extension and contributes the maximum (160 graduates/year) in providing professional fisheries graduates to the Country.
