International Workshop on “Resource Conservation and Alternate Livelihood Opportunities in Coastal Tamil Nadu – ReCAL-TN’15”
The two days International Workshop was held at Hotel Residency Towers, T. Nagar, Chennai on the 19th and 20th of August 2015.
The Workshop was organised by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University in Collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, Netherland.
The Inaugural Session of the Workshop started with the welcome address by Dr. S. Felix, Dean FC&RI, Ponneri followed by the Introduction to Workshop by Prof. Maarten Bavinck, University of Amsterdam.
The Presidential Address was delivered by Prof. Baskaran Manimaran, Vice-chancellor, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University. Dr. S. Vijayakumar, Secretary to Government, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Department delivered the Inaugural Address.
Dr. Yadava, Director BoBP-IGO delivered the felicitation Address. The Inaugural session came to an end with the Vote of Thanks by Mr. Vivekanandhan, Secretary, Fish Marc, Trivandrum.
The inaugural session was followed by the technical sessions which included presentations by experts, group discussions and panel discussion.
The major session topics were exploring the bottom trawling issue, trawl fleet management for conservation and livelihoods, Palk Bay-the cocoon results from University of Amsterdam, Exploring alternative options for trawl fishermen and Fisheries Governance for conservation and Livelihood Security.
The Workshop had a total of 20 numbers of Speakers including Dr.Arif Satria from University of Bogor, Indonesia; Prof Antony Charles, St. Mary's University, Canada; Dr.Maarten Bavinck, University of Amsterdam; Dilanthi, Ruhuna University, Sri Lanka; Dr. Saly Thomas, CIFT; Dr.Y.S.Yadava, BoBP-IGO and 41 numbers of participants.
