The International Workshop on Innovative Integration and Intensification in Indian Shrimp Industry “IIIIS’17”was organised by Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri,a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, in collaboration with the World Aquaculture Society – Asian Pacific Chapter on 03.12.2017, at Hotel Le Royal Meridien, Chennai. Dr. B. Ahilan, Convener and Dean in-charge, welcomed the gathering.
Dr. Soottawat Benjakul, Professor, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand visited FC & RI, Ponneri during 21.11.2017-22.11.2017.He was given a warm welcome by Dr. D.Manikandavelu, Dean i/c, FC&RI,Ponneri. On the first day,he inaugurated “Kayalagam” the retail outlet for ready to eat and ready to cook fishery products and initiated the sale.
The World Fisheries Day was celebrated at FC&RI, Ponneri by inviting school students in and around Ponneri for elocution competition on the theme “Blue revocation for better economy” and drawing competition on the theme “Conservation of fishery resources for future.
Kayalagam sales unit at Fish Techno Park was inaugurated at Fisheries College and Research Institute on 21.11.2017 at 10.15 a.m. by Dr.Soottawat Benjakul, Professor, Prince of Songkala University, Thailand. He also lighted the Lamp signifying the auspicious beginning. Entrepreneurs initiated the sales of their products by selling it to the Chief Guest and other staff members. All the staff members and ELP students were present during the inauguration. The event was coordinated by the Department of Fish Processing Technology
Dr.Siva K.P.Sivakumaran, Environmental Consultant & Project Manager, OTEK Australia, Melbourne visited Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri on 25.10.2017. Dr. B. Ahilan, Dean i/c of the institute welcomed and felicitated the expert. The expert delivered a guest Lecture on a topic entitled “Indian and Sri Lanka in Palk Bay- a proposal for joint fisheries management “in the institute’s seminar hall at 3.30 pm.
The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri offered a one day training programme on “water sample analysis for aquaculture” on 24.10.17. A total of fifteen trainees from various parts of Tamil Nadu participated in the training. Dr.B.Ahilan, Dean i/c of the institute inaugurated the training programme and spoke on the importance of the training programme.
The third International Yoga Day was celebrated in the Fisheries College and Research institute, Ponneri on 21.06.17. The Physical Education Director, Dr. Suruli Muruganandham, who is also a renowned yoga master, was invited to create awareness about the importance of Yoga.
The students and faculty of Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri volunteered in the 8th edition of the Chennai Coastal Cleanup (CCC), a South India Zone awareness drive on our growing garbage footprint and its impact on the environment.
The foundation day of TNFU was celebrated on 19.06.2017 at FC & RI, Ponneri with the theme “Moulding Young Fisheries Grads: Gearing up for Blue Economy”. Dr. Cheryl Antony, Dean-in-Charge, FC & RI, Ponneri welcomed the audience and inaugurated the foundation day celebrations.
Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University successfully tested feed additive product KemZYMETM developed by KEMIN Industries Private Limited in its outstation Advanced Research Far Facility, Madhavaram. The use of conventional feeds such as Rice bran, Ground nut oil cake and Cotton seed cake inhibits the natural digestion process of the animal and in turn it affects the growth rate. To meet these challenges Tamil Nadu Fisheries University and KEMIN industries Pvt Ltd conducted Project Success Meet after commericial testing of the feed additive product KemZYMETM to improve the digestibility in pond culture of Labeo rohita .Mr. kannan, Marketing Director and Sales Aqua felicitated Dr. S. Felix, Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University and Dr.Cheryl Antony delievered the welcome address.
The first meeting of the Board of Studies (BoS) for Basic Sciences Faculty was held on 15.05.2017 at FC & RI, Ponneri.
3P’s (Project, Publication and Patent) monitoring cell meeting was held at FC & RI, Ponneri on 15/05/17. The meeting was convened by Dr. G. Jeyasekaran, Director of Research (i/c), TNFU and attended by the 3P’s monitoring cell members of FC & RI, Ponneri. The institute’s way forward in contributing significantly to the 3P’s was the main topic of discussion in the meeting.
Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri a unit of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University conducted the International workshop on “Advanced Aquaculture Production Systems and Technologies in Shrimp Farming”(IWAASS’17) on 31st January at Hotel Greenpark, Chennai. Shrimp farmers/hatchery technicians from Bangladesh of around ten numbers participated in the event along with the staff and students of FCRI, Ponneri. The workshop was organised in joint efforts with M/s.Vaishaki Bio Marine Shrimps (India) Pvt. Ltd, Chennai and conveyed by Dr. S. Felix, Dean, FCRI, Ponneri.
The 68th Republic Day was celebrated at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri. The National flag was hoisted by the Dean, FC&RI, Ponneri. A Tamil Speech on “Democracy” was given by Ms.Rajalakshmi, II B.F.Sc followed by an English speech on “Democratic India and ways to progress” was given by Mr.Arun Pandian, II B.F.Sc. Mr.Sakthi Saravanan of III B.F.Sc gave a speech on ‘Youth is country’s development’
The first National workshop on “Soil and Water Quality Management in Brackishwater Aquaculture” was held on 3rd & 4th January, 2017 at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri. Underpinning the importance of soil and water quality variables, at the hatchery and culture level for proper management theme of this workshop has been framed to give an insight to the farmers. Twenty participants comprising lab technicians and aqua farmers from different parts of the country such as Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhrapradesh and Tamilnadu were represented.
A good platform to address modern technologies and culture practices in coastal aquaculture issues/challenges/ etc. that support the students to get deeper understanding on subjects and concepts is required. In connection with the same thought, an Inhouse Students Workshop on “Coastal Aquaculture and Mariculture” has been organised on 21.12.2016 at Seminar hall,Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri. Dr. S. Felix, Course Teacher and Dean of the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri took this initiative exercise in terms of students personality development.
Thiru. D. Jayakumar, B.Sc., BL., Honourable Minister of Fisheries visited the Aquatic Rainbow Technology Park (ARTP) project site and enquired on the work progress of the project on 28.11.2016. Dr.S. Felix, Dean, FC&RI, Ponneri and the Principal Investigator of the project briefed the Honourable Minister on the works being carried out with respect to the ARTP project. Dr.K. Rathnakumar, the Vice Chancellor (acting) and Registrar, TNFU was also present on the occasion.
The first AquaSG’16 conference on Innovation and Investment in Aquaculture with the total of 450 participants focused on the recent innovations and advances for investment in shrimp aquaculture. The Academic Professionals, Industrial stakeholders, Innovative Investors, Students and Scholars from more than 25 countries spanning all continents gathered during the three conference days at the Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore.

Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri is hosting a 25 days Skill Development training programme on “Basic Techniques on Ornamental Fish Culture and Breeding”. A total of 30 candidates are to be benefitted by this programme which is sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation.

The International Workshop “Ponshrimp’16-Recent trends in Biofloc Technology and Shrimp Disease Management” was organised by Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri, a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University on 20.02.2016. The Workshop emphasizedon the influence of biofloc on Litopennaeus vannamei particularly during the nursery phase and in shrimp disease management. Dr. Cheryl Antony Professor and Head, Department of Aquaculture welcomed the gathering.
