The NSS unit of the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi organized an awareness programme on “Digitalization of Transactions in Fish Market” at Kombuthurai Village, a fishing hamlet near Kayalpattinam of Thoothukudi District on 06.01.2017. The programme was organized under the “VISAKA” campaign implemented by Government of India from 12th December, 2016 to 12th January, 2017. As per the direction from Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean, Fisheries College & Research Institute, Thoothukudi, the NSS unit of this institution identified the fish market of Kombuthurai Village to transfer it into a digital market place and enable the fishermen with digital payment systems.
The NSS volunteers of this college actively took part in the campaign and imparted practical knowledge on the Digital Transaction System available with different banks in India. Mobile applications such as ‘BHIM’ introduced by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, State Bank Anywhere, Paytm, CANMOBILE, U-Mobile, IndPay and other digital banking aids such as ATM, POS etc. were explained to the fishermen, fish vendors and agents. The fisherwomen engaged in local fish marketing were also enlightened on the digital banking system. The Head Mistress and the teachers of the local middle school were also trained and the teaching aids used by the NSS volunteers are provided with the school to enable them clear the doubts of local fishermen. More than forty villagers were benefited out of the programme. Mr.M.Muruganantham, NSS Programme Officer co-ordinated the programme.
