Kolavai Lake is situated close to Pulipakkam village, running alongside the national highway in Chengalpet, 60 Km away from the Chennai. It is one of the largest lakes with total area of 894 hectares and full water capacity of 476 million cubic feet at a maximum water depth of 4.5 meters.

Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Academy has celebrated TNFU Foundation day on 19.06.2017. Dr. A.R. Thirunavukkarasu, Principal Scientist (Retd.) CIBA was the chief guest of the function. Dr. R. Senthiladeban welcomed the gathering Dr. A.R. Thirunavukkarasu delivered a special lecture “Controlled breeding and Culture of brackish water fishes” and also he has emphasized the importance of Brackish water fisheries. The Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Academy is organising a three day training programme on “Managerial Excellence” from 13.06.2017 to 15.06.2017 at Natesan Institute of Co-operative Management, Chennai. This programme is exclusively organised for the regular inservice trainees. There are nine Inspectors of Fisheries and twelve Sub – Inspectors of Fisheries are participants of the training. The NSS unit of the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi organized an awareness programme on “Digitalization of Transactions in Fish Market” at Kombuthurai Village, a fishing hamlet near Kayalpattinam of Thoothukudi District on 06.01.2017. The programme was organized under the “VISAKA” campaign implemented by Government of India from 12th December, 2016 to 12th January, 2017. As per the direction from Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean, Fisheries College & Research Institute, Thoothukudi, the NSS unit of this institution identified the fish market of Kombuthurai Village to transfer it into a digital market place and enable the fishermen with digital payment systems.
The students and staff of Fisheries College and Research Institute celebrated pongal festival at their campus on 12.01.2017. Students and staff with traditional attire performed pooja, made pongal and celebrated with pomp. Traditional games and activities including Pot breaking (Uri), dancing to the tune of Thappattam, Kummi were performed by the students. The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi a constituent institute of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University has taken up a massive training project on “Hygienic Handling and Management Practices of Fishing Harbour and Landing Centre” under the funding support of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Management for sustainable livelihood (FIMSUL) of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department, Chennai.
Department of Coastal Aquaculture, Tharuvaikulam functioning under the control of Fisheries College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, offered one week vocational training on “Shrimp Farming” from 18.01.2017 to 25.01.2017. A total of 08 trainees including one woman from Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts participated. During this programme, various aspects of shrimp farming along with demonstrations were taught to the participants for one week. After this exposure, all the participants were taken to M/s. RR Aqua Farm, Veppalodai, located in Thoothukudi district so as to gain hands on knowledge in shrimp farming. On the concluding day, Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean distributed the certificates to the participants and spoken on the importance of this week long vocation training programe to motivate the coastal community to take up shrimp farming to alleviate poverty and to improve their financial status. The aim of such one week training course is to provide skill based training in shrimp farming field which will pave way for self employment of the trainees by starting their own farming practices or to get employment opportunities in private shrimp farming sector. A training programme on “Microbial Quality Testing of Seafood” was conducted at the Fish Quality Monitoring and Certification Centre of Department of Fish Quality Assurance and Management, School of Harvest and Post Harvest Technology, Fisheries College & Research Institute campus of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, Thoothukudi during 6th - 10th February 2017. This training programme was organized at the request of M/s.DSF Group of Seafood Companies, Thoothukudi on charge basis. The training mainly focused on the microbial quality assessment of seafoods especially pathogenic microorganisms. Being highly perishable, seafood undergoes microbial attack due to unhygienic handling, processing and storage. With this view, this programme was aimed at training the Quality Control Technologists and Quality Managers working in seafood processing industries. Thirteen participants from Diamond Group of companies namely M/s. Diamond Seafood Exports, M/s. Theva& Co., and M/s. Edhayam Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd., Thoothukudi took part in the training programme.

National Science day was celebrated at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi on 28.02.2017. To commemorate this event, a special address was arranged on the topic “Fisheries and Medicine : Exploration for an inter disciplinary Approach”.
An inter-collegiate quiz competition “FIZZOREE 2017” was conducted at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi on 28.02.2017. The FIZZOREE is celebrated every year at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi since 1983 and the 35th edition of the quiz competition was organized by the Students’ Association. A total of 13 colleges from Southern districts registered for the event and six colleges were selected based on preliminary rounds and the main quiz lasted for 12 rounds. National Engineering College, Kovilpatti won the first prize that carried the Dophinous Trophy and a cash reward of Rs.3000/-. The second and third prize were won by MEPCO Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi and Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli respectively. Dr.B.Manivannan, Professor of English, V.O.Chidambaranar College, Thoothukudi was the Quiz Master. In the prize distribution ceremony, Dr.A.Srinivasan, Vice-President of Students’ Association welcomed the gathering. Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean of the institute and President of Students’ Association presided over the function and spoke on how important it is for the students to convert the information available into knowledge to serve oneself and the community. Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai (ICAR-CIFE) organized the Second National Students Convention on “Innovative Approaches for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” during 3 – 5 March, 2017 at ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai. About 500 students from various Fisheries Colleges and Universities participated and shared their excitement and innovative ideas for the development of fisheries sector especially through education and research. 12 students from Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi participated and presented their poster at this convention. Mr.C.Jayapavithran, M.F.Sc. student was awarded I Prize in the poster presentation on “Transmogrify – carnivore to herbivore” and received cash prize of Rs.10000/-. As part of the convention, each institute was given opportunity for show casing cultural talents of students. Ms.H. Benazir, III B.F.Sc. student won Third Prize for Solo Dance with a cash reward of Rs.2000/-. The students were appreciated by the Dean, Dr.G.Sugumar for their accomplishment bringing laurel to the institute
The Annual Sports Meet 2016-17 of the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi was conducted at the college ground on 10.03.2017. During inaugural function, Shri.S.Selvanagarathinam, IPS, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Thoothukudi Town took salute of the march past contingents of students in the presence of Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean and Dr.C.RajasinghHariston, Physical Director followed by unfurling of the college flag. To enliven the sports event, the Olympic Torch was taken up by the athletes, which was followed by oath taking ceremony by the students. The sports meet was declared open by Shri. S. Selvanagarathinam, IPS, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Thoothukudi Town and all students and staff of this institute attended the inaugural function. About 20 athletic events were conducted and more than 200 students actively participated in the track and field events with true spirit of sportsmanship. Events for staff such as friendly volleyball match between students, 200m race walk and Discuss throw for women staff were also conducted.
The Centre for Marine Finfish Culture organized a one day consultation meet for Cobia farmers on 03.02.2017 under the NADP Programme on Establishment of Marine Finfish Hatchery System at Seeniappa Dhargha. The programme was conducted at Igloo hotel, Pattinamkathan, Ramanathapuram Dt. on 03.02.2017 and it was inaugurated at 11.00 am by Dr.J. Stephen Sampathkumar, Director, CeSAinaugurated the meet. He indicated the role played by TNFU to support the fish farmers and fishermen. Mr. P. Isaac Jayakumar, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department, Ramanathapuram Dt.,in his felicitation, indicated the need for supplying quality cobia seed and extending technical assistance. Further, he specifiedthat the right time intervention by the TNFU for the establishment of finfish hatchery unit at Ramanathapuram and expressed optimism that the hatchery production from the center will cater the needs of the local farmers.

A programme was organized by Fisheries Institute of Technology and Training (FITT),Chennai under the NADP project funding on 28/11/2016 at 11.00 am in Assistant Director (Marine) office, Fisheries Department, Chennai to distribute Global Positioning System (GPS) to 100 fishermen at 50% subsidy.
Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries ThiruD.Jayakumar has distributed the GPS to all 100 beneficiaries and emphasized the importance of GPS in locating potential fisheries population and its benefits.Dr.K.Rathnakumar, Registrar& Acting Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University was present on the occasion.

Ltd., Chennai for the breeding and rearing of marine ornamental fishes in Centre for Marine Fin-Fish Culture, Seeniappa Durgha, Mandapam in Ramnathapuram Dt. on Health Management in Aquaculture
As the aquaculture sector evolves from an artisanal venture to a highly specialised bio-industry, diseases and health management are becoming a major concern.
The general lack of basic knowledge on disease prevention and health management has driven farmers to the injudicious use of antibiotics. These practices are a threat to public health and moreover further compromise sustainable production due to microbial resistance issues.
On the night of 11.01.2016 the TV news channels have broadcasted the news of mass stranding of whale in the coastal region of Aalanthalai, near Tiruchendur in Gulf of Mannar. The Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, Thoothukudi deployed a team of Scientists of FC&RI, Thoothukudi to the whale stranded coast of Aalanthalai.

In commemoration of the World Fisheries Day on 21st Nov. 2015, the need for making awareness on managing global fisheries to ensure sustainable stock and health of the ocean ecosystems by the people connected with the fisheries is felt. Since the Centre is located in the coastline and working amidst fisherfolk, the activities were focussed on fisherfolk and public.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Dr D.R.Anandakumar, Registrar, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and Dr.G.Jeyasekaran, Director of Research, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) in the presence of Dr.Baskaran Manimaran, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) on 22.08.2015 at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore.
To celebrate World Fisheries Day (21st Nov) the Science Club of Students’ Association is organizing the following competitions for students on 21.11.2015.
An Awareness programme on “Cage Culture of Fishes in Inland Water Bodies to Improve the Livelihood of Fishers” was held at Thiruvallur on 15.10.2015. Dr.N.Felix, Officer incharge of Fisheries Institute of Technology and Training(FITT),Chennai has organized this programme and welcomed the gathering. Totally 60 participants from various Inland fishermen societies in and around Poondi reservoir participated in this programme.
