Tamil Nadu Fisheries University was established in 2012 to improve the fisheries sector of Tamil Nadu State. Institute of Fisheries Technology, Nagapattinam was established by Government of Tamil Nadu with a budget provision of Rs.34.08 crore. Subsequently the Institute of Fisheries Technology has been renamed as College of Fisheries Engineering considering the growing importance and emerging needs of fisheries engineering of fisheries engineering sector.
College of Fisheries Engineering is a constituent college of TNFU and it is located at the coastal town of Nagapattinam along the Bay of Bengal. The College is first of its kind in the Country established in 2015 with a sole aim of developing engineering personnel for the fisheries industries.
The College has 6 departments named as Department of Basic Sciences, Department of Basic Engineering, Department of Aquacultural Engineering, Department of Fish Process Engineering, Department of Fisheries Nautical and Marine Engineering and Department of Fisheries Science. The sanctioned staff strength is 21 and presently 12 teaching staff are in place in the College. In the upcoming years the strength of faculty members will be increased to the fullest. Bachelor of Fisheries Engineering is the degree programme now offered in the College. It is a 4 year degree programme [B.E.(Fisheries Engineering)]. This degree empowers the graduates to be an able engineer in the areas like aquaculture engineering, fish processing engineering, fisheries nautical & marine engineering, basic engineering(Civil, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics) that could support and compliment the fisheries industries. In commencing the programme, the initial intake was 20 students admitted during 2015. .
About the curriculum, the course includes study of fish species and aquatic ecosystem, designing of ponds and construction, farm layout, designing of fish processing machineries and application in value addition of products, designing freezing equipment, refrigerating storage devices and structures, designing of fish crafts and gears, computer science application in fisheries sector and usage of electrical equipment in onboard fishing.
The scope for fisheries engineers is vast in all the sectors of fisheries and the first batch will be graduating in 2019. Industries have been informed of the forthcoming availability of fisheries engineers for their absorption. The scope can further expand as the fisheries industries all over the world expands.
