The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, a constituent unit of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University organized an Inter-School elocution for students of Class VIII to X on the title “The role of Youth in the future of Agriculture / Fisheries in India”. The programme was organized as per the direction of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi for strengthening future agriculture of the country by attracting youth towards agricultural education. As part of the several initiatives on Agricultural Education Day Celebrations, the elocution was held on 5th January 2017. Totally 7 schools participated in the competition and Selvi J. VertaSarapha, Holy Cross Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, Selvi B. Reem, Holy Cross Girls Higher Secondary School and Selvi K. Ananthi, SubbiahVidyalayam Girls Higher Secondary School were awarded the first, second and third prizes respectively. In the prize distribution ceremony Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean of the Institute spoke on the importance of Agriculture and allied sectors including Fisheries. He pointed out that although India ranks 2nd in Worldwide farm output, agriculture contributing 13.7% of our GDP, 50% of work force and fisheries registering a growth rate of 8% consistently, the sector is in distress. The youth should involve in building smart villages and taken up agricultural research to boost our food production. Dr.A.Srinivasan, Vice-President of Student’s Association welcomed the gathering and Mr.SubashChandrabose delivered the vote of thanks. Dr.N.Neethiselvan and Mrs.T.Umamaheswari, faculty staff of the institute served as judges of the competition.
