“Shrimp Harvest Gala” conducted at BRFF campus in DBT Funded Project
HEALTHY SHRIMPS PRODUCTION IN BIOFLOC TECHNOLOGY
Eco based approach to generate high profit in shrimp farming
As shrimp farms discharge, continue to remain a risk to the environment, the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri has fine tuned a technology that substantially reduces the nitrogeneous metabolites like ammonia, nitrite and nitrogen level through insitu and exsitu bioremediation.
On 08.06.2017 Thursday, “Shrimp Harvest Gala” was organised by Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri, at Brackish water Research Farm Facility, OMR, Vaniyanchavadi. Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries and Finance, Thiru. D. Jayakumar B.Sc., B.L has distributed the healthy shrimps harvested from biofloc ponds. He also released the fact sheet on “Healthy Shrimp Production in Biofloc Technology” and this was received by, Tmt. K. Maragatham, Member of Parliament of Kancheepuram Constituency and Thiru. M. Kothandapani, Member of Legislative assembly . He also added that TNFU is the first university in the country which achieved success in exsitu and insitu biofloc production at the commercial scale in shrimp farming.
Dr.S.Felix, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University said that this technology will reduce the total ammonia nitrogen under ‘heterotrophic microbial system’. Besides reducing the nitrogen level, the technology will help to reduce input costs and combat diseases by adopting Nursery raceway based nursery technology in shrimp farming. He further added that TNFU took an initiative to frame the guidelines for Nursery phase adoption and Inland saline shrimp farming and soon G.O. for issuance of license will be. Around 400 kgs of Shrimps were harvested and distributed to the major buyers and local people.
Dr.Cheryl Antony, Dean i/c., of Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri conveyed her gratitude to the Fisheries Minister, Member of Parliament of Kancheepuram Constituency and Member of Legislative Assembly for taking part in the harvest gala of successful experiment in Biofloc technology.
