"Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood"


Kolavai Lake is situated close to Pulipakkam village, running alongside the national highway in  Chengalpet, 60 Km away from the Chennai. It is one of the largest lakes  with total area of 894 hectares and  full water capacity of 476 million cubic feet  at a maximum water depth of 4.5 meters.

The cage culture unit consist of 32 cages(8 batteries of 4 cages in each battery)  with a size of 4x4 m each was established in the year 2016 by Fisheries Institute of Technology and Training(FITT) renamed presently as Directorate of Fisheries Technology,Training and Incubation Centre-Aquaculture(DFTTICA),Chennai under the NADP project on Cage culture of fishes in Inland water bodies. All cages are made of HDPE material tied with inner and outer nets for a maximum depth of 4 m. GIFT tilapia was stocked at the rate of 20 per cubic meter, floating feed was given twice per day and growth was recorded. Among the fish population 30% fishes achieved above     500 g size in 5 months’ period.

To mark the Foundation Day celebration, GIFT Tilapia harvest programme was inaugurated by our Vice-Chancellor, Prof.S.Felix on 17.06.2017 in Cage culture unit at Kolavai lake,Chengalpattu. GIFT Tilapia of 500 – 1000 g size were harvested and sold to Inland fishermen. The harvest will be carried out continuously and completed before end of June 2017. It is expected that the total fish production of will be around               5 tonnes. This programme was co-ordinated by  Dr.N.Felix, Director in-charge, DFTTICA, Chennai.
