"Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood"

Foundation Day Celebrations at FC & RI, Ponneri

The foundation day of TNFU was celebrated on 19.06.2017 at FC & RI, Ponneri with the theme “Moulding Young Fisheries Grads: Gearing up for Blue Economy”.  Dr. Cheryl Antony, Dean-in-Charge, FC & RI, Ponneri welcomed the audience and inaugurated the foundation day celebrations.

The foundation day was celebrated with a series of experience-sharing lectures and orations by seven experts from various well-unknown as well as unexplored aspects in the fisheries sector. The series of lectures were planned in such a way that the students should be enriched with self-sustaining attitude through aquapreneurship rather than relying on typical white collar jobs. This intention was reflected in the number and background of the invited speakers. Two of them represented Government/Public domain whereas the remaining five are from private domain of fisheries.

Representing the public domain, Mr.Julius Edward, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Kancheepuram and Dr.O.Henry Francis, Livestock consultant, SBI Manager (Retd.) gave a clear picture about the fisheries governance and opportunities in banking sector respectively. In connection to the private domain, Mr.Rajaraman, Proprietor, Raj Aquaclinic encouraged the students to start aqua clinics soon after their graduation and become efficient fish doctors.

Mr.Mahiban, Boat Builders, Platina Marine Services explained the advantages of owning a fishing vessel and profits in it.

Dr.John Suresh, Founder and Executive Director, PLANT NGO gave the nuances of working effectively for the public welfare at grass root levels through a NGO.

Dr. Alagesa Pandian, Agropreneur from Hosur explained why youth should venture into farming and the importance of their retainment in it. The last lecture from the private domain was from Mr. Alagappan, HR Trainer who detailed the significance of teacher-student kinship.

As soon as all the lectures were over, foundation day celebrations began with Dr. Joe K. Kizhakudan, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CMFRI as the chief guest of the event. The chief guest in his address congratulated TNFU for achieving the feat and shared his career experience with the audience. He also interacted with the students and stressed the importance of their role in sustainable fisheries development in near future.

Dr. S. Balasundari, Professor and Head, DFPT was the Event co-ordinator of the Foundation day celebrations. The celebration had a beautiful conclusion with the cultural programme by the students
