Born on 5th June 1971 at Rajapalayam, in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu,

Dr. S.BALASUBRAMANIAN received secondary and Board High School education at PACM Higher Secondary School, Rajapalayam. He completed his BE (Agricultural Engineering), ME (Agricultural Engineering) and PhD (Agricultural Engineering) specialization with Agricultural Process Engineering at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore-641003, Tamil Nadu, India. He earlier worked in a Private Company and TNAU, Coimbatore in different job responsibilities before starting his scientific career in ICAR.

In 1998, he initiated his career as scientist in Agricultural Research Service of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi at ICAR-Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (ICAR-CIPHET), Ludhiana. He was associated with Project Coordination Unit of All India Coordinated Research Project on Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology and in assisting the PC in coordinating the Centre and monitoring the Adhoc projects across the Country. At ICAR-CIPHET, he initiated the research and development on Food Extrusion Processing technology and established primary processing facility, food extrusion processing facility, product & by-product utilization laboratory, bio-engineering properties laboratory and state-of-art cryogenic grinding facility for spices. From the early period, he has been working in collaboration with Industries, CSIR laboratories, Agricultural Universities. He has been nationally recognized for his outstanding contribution to research, education and advisory activity in agricultural and post-harvest processing of millets. His research accomplishments include primary and secondary processing of millets, besides food extrusion and cryogenic spice grinding. His designs of CIAE-millet mill and multicrop pearler are adopted widely in the millet processing industries. Licensed about five numbers of technologies including CIAE-Millet Mill & millet based extruded products. His technologies are simple, economically viable, ecologically sound and easily adaptable. His works on soybean roaster, millet popping machine, millet destoner, millet husk briquetting, millet parboiling, pearl millet based instant mixes, process and project feasibility report for minor millets based pasta production, retexturized fruit bar made of protein enriched extrudates with fresh fruit pulps, pregrinder for higher oil recovery are equally notable.  To his credit, he has also developed a dozen of nutri-cereal based ready-to-eat food products. His efforts in training and establishing millet processing plants across the country are remarkable. Guided and developed about 15 numbers of entrepreneurs in the area of millet and extrusion processing in Punjab and Tamilnadu. Guided more than 25 numbers of PhD, M.Tech, M.Sc, B.Tech scholars.

His research activity has continuously been supported from 1998 by different funding agencies like Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Department of Science and Technology, NAIP, NABARD. The knowledge gained from his researches was developed into practical technologies and he established research-industry partnership during the past 10 years. He has published 60 research papers in National and International journals of repute, 05 book chapters, 09 bulletins and organized 10Trainings and International workshops to provide hands on experience to fellow colleagues and different stakeholders.

He also served as visiting faculty to Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, Punjab. Currently he is a member of Board of Studies for various Universities. He is recipient of several awards and honours, such as IEI-Outstanding Engineer Award-2015, ISAE-Commendation Medal-2011, Jawaharlal Nehru Award-2008, CIPHET-Decade Service Award, Appreciation awards, TNAU-merit fellowship, qualified NET-97, NET-96, GRE-2003, awards for best Oral &Poster presentations. He is an elected Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata and Life Member of six scientific professional societies. He took initiatives in organizing several workshops including ‘Towards food security and second green revolution-workshop on extrusion processing (07-08 April 2011)’ in collaboration with Kansas State University, the Summer school on ‘Advances in bioengineering/ bioprocessing and quality assessment techniques’ (01-21 June 2011) as Course Director and several Entrepreneurial Development programs.

He previously held the post of Principal Scientist at ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering Regional Centre, Coimbatore-641007, TamilNadu. His research interest is to develop sustainable and ideal model of value addition on agricultural and fisheries technologies by identifying aspects and prospects from farm level through post-harvest management (processing and entrepreneurship development) and finally promotion and commercialization.
